Best Improved Society Nomination
Congratulations to the UL Law Society for receiving a nomination for UL’s most improved society at this year’s Clubs and Societies Awards.
Unfortunately on the awards night the Law Soc didn’t win and the honour went, deservingly, to ULTV. However, the nomination was a welcome boost to our relatively young society.
We look forward to building on this in the future and in the coming years we are confident of the UL Law Society becoming a regular recipient of these types of nominations and awards.
Law Ball
The University of Limerick Law Ball was once again a great success held this year on the 16th of February. This year saw a huge increase in the numbers attending the Ball as over 360 students and faculty packed into the beautiful ball room of the Strand Hotel, Limerick.
The meal and service delivered by the staff of the hotel was simply exemplary, and I’m sure was a welcome change for many of the students who are more used to a dinner of beans on toast.
The night really got going when one of Ireland’s premier live bands, J90, took to the stage followed by their DJ.
The University of Limerick Law Society would again like to give a huge ‘go raibh míle maith agaibh’ to the work of the committee and all our supporters, without whos help, the Ball simply would not have been possible.
Law Ball
The University of Limerick Law Ball will take place this year on the 16th February in the Strand Hotel Limerick.
There will be a live band and a DJ and we are in the process of hopefully confirming an additional act. J90 will be our band for the evening and are one of Ireland’s best up and coming bands and are reknowned for their great live shows.
Tickets are on sale from the 2nd February and will remain on sale until they sell out. We would encourage you to get your tickets early as tickets generally sell very quickly.
A great night is promised and we look forward to seeing you all there.
Civil Partnership Debate
On the 8th of November last the UL Law Society, in conjunction with Deb U, ran an extremely successful debate. The joint Houses posed the question: Does the Civil Partnership Bill go far enough?. The debate took the format of four speakers being given fifteen minutes to speak, which was then followed by a question and answers session.
The four speakers were Sen. David Norris, the well-known civil rights campaigner and presidential hopeful, Gráinne Healy of Marriage Equality, Chris Robson of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network, and finally, Fr. McKevitt, the editor of Alive, a Catholic publication. The debate was interesting and indeed entertaining, a claim that is often not made about such events. The sizeable crowd, in the almost full Jonathan Swift Lecture Theatre, often found themselves laughing at the quick wit and humour of the four guest speakers. Following the debate those in attendance were afforded the opportunity to make their views heard and ask questions of the guests, which was perhaps the most interesting part of the evening, in that it conveyed the different opinions of those students present.
The evening was all in all a huge success, proving to be one of the best attended UL Law Society’s seminars ever, in spite of the poor weather. This is perhaps as a result of the high profile of our guests, and also is in no small part due to the effort put in by the committees of both societies involved in the evening.
The University of Limerick Law Society would particularly like to extend their thanks to our sponsors, A & L Goodbody Solicitors, also the University of Limerick Students Union, our prestigious guest speakers on the evening and those on the committee that ensured the evening’s success.
